Tree of Life Case Study

Client:

Tree of Life,
St. Augustine, Florida.
Southeast Distribution Center.

Tree of Life, Inc. is an industry leader in providing marketing and distribution services to the health conscious consumer. The Tree of Life Companies support their customers with 15 full service distribution facilities located throughout the United States and Canada.

Application:

To support the growing Southeast region, Tree of Life designed and built a 230,000 square foot facility in St. Augustine Florida. The move into this "state of the art" distribution center was completed in 2001.

Customer Situation:

The Tree of Life Division fulfills an order mix of split case, full case, ½ pallet, and full pallet quantities. The Tree of Life Company wanted to increase their order fulfillment capabilities with increased speed, accuracy, and overall performance. To implement leading edge solutions, Tree of Life acquired the services of DCB & Company, a logistics consulting firm based in Marietta, GA. DCB and Company is an engineering-based professional services firm, which provides retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers with logistics consulting assistance. DCB & Company area of expertise include logistics strategy planning, labor performance improvement programs, material handling systems & implementation management and other services.

WEi Role:

WEi was selected to engineer and integrate all storage and picking systems required for the project. These systems included:

  • Full pallet selective storage
  • Narrow aisle full case storage
  • Full case pallet flow
  • Split case carton flow
  • Static shelving

A multi-level pick module, with 2 levels of carton flow and 1 level of static shelving fulfills the split case orders. A single level pick module with carton flow stores refrigrated split case orders. Narrow aisle handstack rack and full case pallet flow "pick to belt" system is utilized for full case orders. Full and half pallets are picked out of selective high bay racking in the warehouse, cooler, and freezer. These items are batch picked out of the various systems, sorted to the shipping dock door, palletized, and shipped via Tree of Life fleet. This is accomplished by the integration of the storage and picking systems with a conveyor/sortation system and a WMS. The system has the capability of processing and picking over 200 orders/hour. WEi uses it's own nationwide installation services, in house engineering, and fabrication facility to provide exceptional material handling systems. WEi is proud to be a part of Tree of Life's success and leadership in health foods and products distribution.
